Cameco Releases 2016 Sustainable Development Report

Cameco today released its 2016 Sustainable Development Report, following the new Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) 4.0 Sustainability Guidelines. This is Cameco’s sixth sustainable development report, which is a report card to stakeholders on the social, environmental and economic performance of the company.

“Although the last five years have been tough for our company and our industry, I believe Cameco has risen to the challenge,” said Tim Gitzel, president and CEO of Cameco. “Our people have found ways to be innovative, and to do more with less, without compromising on our commitments to safety, the environment and communities.”

The report shows Cameco’s performance on 32 key GRI indicators as well as two corporate indicators unique to the company. Some of the highlights include:

  • Zero significant environmental incidents
  • Continued low lost-time injury rate for both employees and contractors, with a third national John T. Ryan Safety Trophy for the McArthur River operation (recognizing the best safety performance in a Canadian metal mine in 2015)
  • Local spending of $380 million in 2015, or about 70% of our total
  • Being named one of Canada’s most sustainable corporations by Corporate Knights
  • High levels of public support in locations where we operate.
